USPS offers multiple important services to make the user experience as much better as possible. One such service is USPS Forward Mail which allows users to receive their important mail items and packages even if they are out of station or at a new address.

There are two services available under USPS Forward Mail.

  1. USPS Regular Forward Mail Service
  2. USPS Premium Forwarding Service

Regular Forward Mail Service

USPS offers a service called “Change of Address” with which users can change their address with USPS and all your mail items and packages will be delivered to the new address. If you’re making a move to a new address (either permanently or just for few months) then use USPS mail and package forwarding services to continue receiving all your important mail items.

  • Use this service if you’re making a permanent move to a new address.
  • If you are moving temporarily then you can use this service for as short as 15 days or as long as 1 year. After the first 6 months, you can extend for another 6 months.


  • You will be charged $1.00 (the charge verifies your identity).

After availing this service, you will start receiving mail items piece by piece to the new address.

Premium Forward Mail Service

This is a temporary service that can be used by people for a minimum of 2 weeks up to a maximum of 1 year. There will be a one-time enrollment fee and weekly fees thereafter. USPS will hold your mail items, pack them, and then ship to you each week via Priority Mail Service. This service is not available for PO Box addresses.

  • One time enrollment fees of $20.10 retail or $18.45 if you enroll online.
  • Weekly fees of $20.10 for each week.

How it Works

  • After availing this service, you will receive an email notification each week for your weekly shipment. Check your account each week for an email notification with a tracking number. You will also be notified in case there is no mail to be shipped. Your package should arrive in 1 to 3 business days.
  • Priority mail items are shipped immediately or included in a weekly package, whichever is faster.
  • There will be a separate shipping of First Class mail items at no extra cost if it doesn’t fit in the weekly package.

Also, Note

  • Premium Forwarding Service Residential is a domestic service only. APO/FPO/DPO and ZIP Codes starting with “969” are excluded.

Enroll for PFS-Residential

There are two ways through which one can enroll for this service.

  • Enroll online
  • Enroll at your local Post Office location with 2 forms of ID and evidence of residence at the primary address.

Features of USPS Forward Mail Service

  • Overnight scheduled delivery via Priority Mail Express
  • Shipment will arrive within 1, 2, or 3 expected business days via Priority Mail.
  • You can choose the frequency of shipments, Monday through Saturday.
  • Shipments can weigh up to 70 lbs
  • USPS Tracking service is available.

If your business is getting mail at multiple locations the use Premium Forwarding Service Commercial (PFS-Commercial) to receive mail items at one destination. USPS will combine all your mail items into a single package and ship them via Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail to the address you provide.

Q1) How to Change PFS Residential Order Online?

A) If you’ve submitted your initial request online then only you will be able to make changes to a PFS-Residential Online order. Also, you need to make sure you enter your changes in time.

Q2) How to Request a Refund for PFS Residential?

A) In order to request a refund for Premium Forwarding Service Residential (PFS-Residential) service, you need to provide the following;

  • the Order Number, Confirmation Number, or Tracking Number for the weekly shipment you wish to refund
  • reason for the refund request

You will able to request a refund through the medium that you have used initially to avail this service. If you set up this service online then request a refund online. In case, if you made a request at a Post Office location, then you need to visit the Post Office to submit a refund request.

The following are not eligible for a refund:

  • Enrollment Fee
  • Weekly shipping fees, unless pre-paid and unused
  • Delayed shipments
