USPS Hold for Pickup Service – How it Works

USPS hold for pickup is a service which delivers packages to a USPS facility and a specified user can pick up the package by giving valid ID proof. A recipient will receive a pickup notification by phone, e-mail, or Short Message Service (SMS)/text message whenever a package is available for pickup. The recipient has to take an immediate action i.e. within 5 days (3 days for Priority Mail Express). If a recipient fails to take any action within a specified time then a reminder shall be sent via automated email or text message.

If a recipient will not show up to pick the package then in such a situation a final email or text message will be sent that the shipment has been returned to the sender after 15 days (5 days for Priority Mail Express).

As per the information on, this service is available at approximately 31,000 designated Post Offices and offered for sale at approximately 2,500 self-service kiosks. This service provides guaranteed delivery to a designated hold for pickup location. Only the authorized recipient with a valid Photo ID proof can pick up a package from the location.

Hold For Pickup service allow customers to pick up the shipments when it is convenient for them, with the guarantee that their shipments are fully safe and secure. Automatic notifications via e-mail or SMS text messaging are also sent whenever a package is available for pickup.

USPS Hold for Pickup, USPS Hold for Pickup Service, USPS Hold for Pickup Request

Not Available With:

  • Not available for First-Class Mail letters and flats and mail addressed to APO/FPO/DPO destinations.

Also, note that the Hold For Pickup service times for Priority Mail Express Next Day and Second Day items are 10:30 am and 3:00 pm. There is no fee for the 10:30 pickup time.
